DescriptionYosemite Sierra Summer Camp was established in 1972 to provide Christian adventure camp experiences for children 8 to 16 years old. While most west coast Christian camp and conference centers offer weekend or week long programs, founders Jim and Manya Slevcove designed longer stays of 2 or more weeks to provide for deeper learning and broader growth. Bass Lake, in the shadow of Yosemite National Park, was selected as the ideal location for YSSC. A commitment to health and safety, excellent staffing, creative and wisely paced programming, and diverse activities results in campers: In 1998, current executive directors Steve and Sara Kuljis took over the helm from Sara’s parents, the Slevcoves. As second generation owners/directors, they carry on YSSC’s legacy of partnering with parents in helping shape youth. The program remains a unique balance of traditional and adventure activities, small and large group teaching, age appropriate activities with quiet moments and wacky fun. Along with growing up in a camp family, Sara's leadership is shaped by her BS in nutrition and career experience in youth program planning, staff development and public relations. She serves on the board of the American Camp Association, Southern California/Hawaii Section. She is a frequent speaker on the benefits of camp and staff training. Steve is also well suited for his leadership role with a BS in Construction Management, and work experience in building, facility management, business administration, and wilderness camping. Steve serves as legislative chair for Western Association of Independent Camps, and as a board member of the California Coalition for Youth. The Kuljis' have three young children and spend winters in San Juan Capistrano, CA. Ron and Heather Eckert are long standing friends of the YSSC family. For over two decades Ron has enjoyed the “magic” of YSSC as a camper, seasonal staff member, and associate director. Along with years of summer camp experience and child/youth development Ron holds a BA in Social Science Education from Seattle Pacific University, a multiple subject California teaching credential, a Masters of Divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary and is an ordained Presbyterian Pastor. In addition, Ron served as Director of Youth Ministry at Sierra Vista Presbyterian Church for six years. His education and experience are well suited for the camping environment where creativity and whole child development thrive. Ron, Heather and daughter Rosie will welcome a new arrival coming in December. The Eckert's reside in San Clemente, CA. Details
