DescriptionThe University of Maryland Baltimore County returns as hosts for its eighth season of the NIKE Girls Basketball Camp in 2010. The 500-acre campus in the beautiful suburbs of Baltimore is a great setting for a camp program. Camp emphasis covers fundamental basketball skills, team play, and much more. Phil Stern, who is in his eighth year as UMBC’s Head Women’s Basketball Coach, returns to direct this instructional camp week. Coach Stern has developed a reputation of taking struggling programs and skyrocketing them to the top of their conference. In his first season at UMBC, Coach Stern held true to his reputation by leading the Retrievers to the conference title game. In 2007, UMBC won the America East Championship, and went to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the program's history. Prior to UMBC, Coach Stern transformed the University of South Carolina Aiken Women’s Basketball program into a perennial Division II power. Stern went 64-47 (.577) with the Lady Pacers, but was 44-13 (.772) during his final two years at Aiken. In his last year, USC Aiken made their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance and captured the school's first-ever Peach Belt Conference Regular Season Championship. The Lady Pacers also won their second consecutive North Division Title, finishing with a 22-6 overall record and a 16-3 conference mark. For his efforts, Stern was recognized both within the conference as well as nationally. After the 2001-02 season and 1999-2000 season, he was selected by his peers as the Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year. Stern was also honored nationally when he was named the WBCA District III Coach of the Year in 2002 and the Women's Division II Bulletin Coach of the Month for December 1999.
