Description

The Women's Basketball Hall of Fame opened in June 1999 in Knoxville, Tennessee. It is the only facility of its kind dedicated to all levels of women's basketball. So whether you are looking for inspiration, education or just plain fun, the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame is the place to find it!

The outside of the striking 32,000 square foot Hall of Fame is encompassed by two amazing basketballs. The world's largest basketball is located on the north end of the Hall, weighs 10 tons and sits on top of a glass staircase that resembles a basketball net. A brick courtyard, shaped like a basketball, is located on the southern end of the facility. Many of the bricks are engraved to honor guests, inductees, and a host of others who have chosen to leave their legacy at the Hall of Fame.

Inside, the Hall is a bright fun-filled facility anchored with a 17-foot bronze sculpture by California artist Elizabeth McQueen, that exemplifies our mission to "honor the past, celebrate the present, and promote the future" of women's basketball.

The Hall is filled with multimedia presentations and numerous basketball artifacts, photographs, scrapbooks, medals, trophies, and old uniforms that bring the history of women's basketball to life. In the State Farm Tip-Off theater, you will see Hoopful of Hope, a 15-minute video production covering the history of our game. The production shows some of the all-time greats from the sport including players, coaches, and teams from AAU, collegiate, and professional organizations.

In the Modern Locker Room Exhibit you can sit in on pre-game or halftime chalk talks, and listen to some of the nation’s most successful coaches talk to their teams. The current lineup features Connecticut’s Geno Auriemma, Maryland’s Brenda Frese, North Carolina’s Sylvia Hatchell, Oklahoma’s Sherri Coale, Tennessee’s Pat Summitt and Georgia’s Andy Landers.

Continuing through the Hall, there are hundreds of interesting artifacts, all with great stories behind them. You will see one of the original rule books from 1901, Teresa Edwards' collections of medals, including her five Olympic medals, the bucket that the nuns beat on to make noise during Immaculata's championship run in the 1970s, the bright yellow West Virginia University jersey worn by Georgeann Wells when she became the first female player to dunk in a collegiate game, and much more.

Our basketball courts are located downstairs - don't forget to bring your basketball shoes! There are three baskets, one representing the past, present and future. Each basket is a different height, so you can test your skills on all three levels.

You will end your tour in the "Hall of Honor," where we formally recognize the individuals who have been inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame. Each inductee has helped the game of women's basketball grow, and their achievements are highlighted in this area of the Hall. This is just a glimpse at what is contained in the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame. We hope to see you in the Hall soon!
