The SWAAU is an affiliate of AAU Girls Basketball. The AAU Girls Basketball program, the largest and most prestigious girls basketball program in the country, was established in 1972 as a part of the AAU Junior Olympic program. AAU has three national tournaments for teams to qualify for, the AAU Division I National Tournament, the AAU Division II National Tournament and now the AAU Grade Base National Tournaments. Teams qualify for these national tournaments by playing in the SWAAU Regional Qualifying Tournament. Around 1000 teams throughout the nation participate in AAU National Tournaments.
