Kansas Wesleyan’s tennis teams split with the Friends Falcons as the women won 7-2 and the men lost 9-0 on Monday afternoon in Salina.
The women’s team remained in second place in the conference with the win, as conference leading Bethel defeated Bethany 7-2 this afternoon to push the Swedes a half-game back in the standings.
In doubles play, the KWU duo of Rachael Renneisen and Vicki Andrade beat Friends’ Sara Pugh and Sam Weeks 8-1; and KWU’s team of Shonna Webster and Jeni Wolters beat Sara McVay and Sam Hutson 8-6. Friends got one point in doubles as the Falcon duo of Elly Johnson and Sarah Goldsmith beat Kalin Eshelman and Macy McMakin 8-6.
In women’s singles play, Renneisen beat Pugh 6-0, 6-2; Eshelman beat Weeks 7-6 (7-4), 6-3; Andrade beat Johnson 6-0, 6-2; McMakin beat Goldsmith 6-1, 6-3; Webster beat Hutson 8-1; and Friends’ McVay beat Wolters of KWU 8-6.
On the men’s side, Friends easily dispatched the Coyotes 9-0. With the loss, the Coyotes drop to 1-3 in the KCAC and 3-9 overall.
In singles play, Mark Barlett lost to Scott Matzen 3-6, 4-6; Christian Cruz lost to Colten Heinrich 2-6, 0-6; Josh Farrell lost to Bill Bloomquist 1-6, 0-6; Luis Lopez lost to Cory Cockrell 1-6, 2-6; Adam Watson lost to David Alley 0-6, 0-6 and Sean Welcher lost to Wes Miller 2-6, 2-6.
In doubles, Barlett/Cruz lost to Heinrich/Cockrell 8-9 (4-7); Farrell/Welcher lost to Matzen/Bloomquist 1-8 and Lopez/Watson lost to Alley/Hartig 6-8.
