Camp Okotoks is a Christian summer camp. We offer an enjoyable camping experience for children, and youth from the city of Calgary as well as the surrounding area. As a church-based camp, we are staffed by Christian volunteers, who are selected for their skill and interest in young people.
During the winter of 1955-56 a number of young couples in the Calgary area, primarily from Bethany Chapel, were concerned about the need for young people's camping activities, and we met for our first Camp Committee meeting on February 22, 1956. In may we contacted the Foothills Camping Association and made arrangements to rent their facilities. Although primitive, there were 12 cabins, a Dining Hall, and Chapel. This, we agreed, was better than starting with tents. Cooking facilities and the kitchen were indeed rustic. Water was pumped from a well into the kitchen by a hand pump and an open trough through a hole in the wall. Of course, all hot water was heated on the stove. They cooked on a coal and wood stove and the stove did double duty as it provided heat on cool mornings. Tea towels were washed on a scrub board. Their were pit toilets and outdoor wash basins. But, the camp was close to Calgary.
