In 1979, Gene Johnston purchased a 300 acre hunting lodge in the beautiful mountains of Northern California. His purpose in purchasing the property was to fulfill a promise he made to the Lord as a young man in his twenties. He promised, "If You will provide the resources, I will invest them in a manner that will have eternal value."
Under the direction of Bruce Johnston, the eldest son of the twelve Johnston children, the JH Ranch opened its doors for the first time in 1980. The first leadership camp was known as Second Wind for high school students.
Through the process of "practical application," Second Wind was designed to help students develop a practical understanding of life purpose, personal values, and leadership skills. Over time, Second Wind has been recognized across the country by educators, pastors and school administrators as one of the finest youth leadership programs in America. Second Wind programs now include a junior high program (Challenge), high school program (Second Wind), and advanced adventure for high school students who have completed Second Wind (Trac II).
