DescriptionRoslyn, a retreat center of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, was bequeathed to the Episcopal Diocese in 1934 by Ms. Annie Rose Walker. Ms. Walker was a member of the historic St. Paul's Church in downtown Richmond and had friendships with the parish rector Beverley Tucker and his brother, Henry St. George Tucker, the Bishop of Virginia. After a favorite nephew's death in the late 1920's she found great solace in the Church and she grew more actively involved in her parish. Ms. Walker had residences in both New York City and in the city of Richmond. Her country horse farm was west of the Richmond city limits in the rolling hills overlooking the Kanawha Canal and the James River. The original buildings on the property were a farmhouse (now Powers Hall) and the stables (now Tucker Hall). Ms. Walker began hosting friends, clergy, and scholars on the farmhouse porch for lunch and spirited Sunday afternoon lectures and discussions. She possessed a strong sense of stewardship and mission and she began to envision a diocesan 'center' that would continue to provide a place for religious education and spiritual growth to clergy after her death. She bequeathed her land, buildings, and a generous endowment for their care to the Episcopal Diocese with the stipulation that they were to be governed independently of the Diocese. Roslyn still occupies the same land and has grown in size to sixteen buildings and now hosts over 400 conference and retreat groups each year. Roslyn's natural beauty, peaceful atmosphere, and hospitality continue to reflect the faithful and generous spirit of its original steward and benefactress, Annie Rose Walker. We hope you will visit soon and enjoy this remarkable and treasured gift. Details
