Description

The mission of Concerned Care, Inc. is to maximize the capability of individuals with developmental disabilities to manage their own lives and minimize their dependence on others.

Our Vision...Concerned Care is an accountable and effective team, supporting and honoring the people we serve and the people who serve.  We are living choices while enhancing community.

Concerned Care is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities and is a United Way Agency.

Concerned Care, Inc. (CCI) was founded in 1972 by a group of parents and other interested individuals who had worked closely with elected officials for passage of Senate Bill 40 “Handicap Tax” levy. The first group home was opened in 1973.

In 1975, CCI began to look at more independent living for some of their clients and a Supervised Apartment Living Program was implemented with one staff member and one client.

Responding to the needs of individuals living on their own or with families, CCI established the Community Recreation Program in 1976. Transportation and supervision we provided for both CCI residential clients as well as other individuals who needed the service.

The 1980s saw growth and expansion for both residential and recreation programs. New group homes were opened, and more people were served.

In 1991, CCI pioneered the newly designated Individualized Support Living Program with the Department of Mental Health. The ISL program served individuals who require from 24-hour to only minimal supervision in an apartment setting. The agency earned accreditation by the Commission of Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.

The 1996 purchase of a historic bank building in North Kansas City provided permanent space for administrative offices and gave the agency much needed visibility.

The Lloyd & Carol Brown Opportunity Apartments opened in 2004 and provides 18 one-bedroom apartments for very low income persons with developmental disabilities. The project was built with a HUD grant.

The rapid response of CCI to the growing and changing needs of those with developmental disabilities has enabled the agency to become a recognized leader in the field. Today a highly trained staff of more than 125 serves approximately 115 consumers in group homes or assisted living facilities. The recreation program serves over 500 people each year.
