Description

The dream of Aspetuck Valley CC started in 1965 with 10 men who were tired of waiting to sign up for tee times, long rounds of golf and average playing conditions at local courses. They banded together to start a new club built on the basic premise of no tee times and a limited membership to keep the course open and available at all times. Once land was located, each man threw in $50 to fund a feasibility study. Once completed, these men then recruited an additional 138 new members and each put up a $400 bond. At that time, there was no golf course to sell, only a dream. All had a love of golf and the imagination necessary to believe they could build a golf course from the wet and hilly 168-acre parcel located next to the Aspetuck River. To secure bank financing, the group needed 150 commitments and to this day they are referred to as the Founding Members. Aspetuck Valley Country Club was incorporated in 1967 and so began the journey to build a golf course and country club.

In the early days of the golf course development, the Club had fairway rock picking parties to expedite the grass growth complete with entertainment and food, which were held under tents around the 18th tee. Many of the founding members lived on adjoining property and their kitchens at one time or another helped feed the membership.

The first structure built was the pool house, which served as clubhouse, board and committee meeting room, locker room, lunchroom and bar. The golf pro shop was located in a rented trailer between the current 14th green and 15th tee. The current back nine was developed first. Despite financial challenges and having rain wash away fairway seed on several holes four times, the founding members were able to finish the back nine in 1969. By 1970 the front nine was completed. During the early years when the course was being built, many members loaned money, kitchen and sports equipment, food, a piano and even a winter front door to the Club. Whether it was helping the Club with physical needs or hosting numerous membership cocktail parties at their home, everyone was involved.

In 1974 the clubhouse operations were moved to a small home on the property called the Hopkins House. This house, with several modifications over the early years, would serve as the main clubhouse until 1990 when a new facility was built. An old stone onion storage shed located behind the present 1st tee served as the golf pro shop until 1996.

Today, Aspetuck has grown to 400 members and is a full service family oriented country club with 18 holes of golf, 9 tennis and 3 paddle tennis courts, swimming pool and diving tank and extremely busy junior golf, tennis and swimming programs. At present, the club has over 500 children under the age of 21.

The club hosts a three-day member guest, which began when the first nine holes were completed and has quickly become the hallmark event of each year. The tradition continues today.

Based on course rating, the CSGA rates Aspetuck in the top ten of most difficult courses in Connecticut. Aspetuck has hosted numerous CSGA, MGA and MET PGA championship tournaments as well as the Lessings 4 day AJGA Junior Championship.
