Description

Concord United Methodist Church believes that God is calling and empowering us to make disciples by devotion to God, powerful worship, and proclamation of the good news of Jesus Christ; and to prepare God’s people for works of service so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, and become mature.

History:

Our Concord Methodist Church began as part of the Oconomowoc Mission in the summer of 1859 (149 years ago!) – and this was part of a branch of the Watertown charge.  At a congregational meeting at the Concord Town Hall – members decided to build a church.  Land was donated for the church site and also for the cemetery.  No record can be found of the dedication but the first service was held Sept 1, 1875 with a membership of about 80 people.  In 1915, the church building burned during an electrical storm.  Altho the building was destroyed – the spirit of the people was not.  The church was immediately rebuilt – this time with a basement.  And by the following year – it was debt free. Many other changes have taken place.  The church is now part of a two point charge with the Sullivan United Methodist Church.

We are so happy and so proud of the fact that three former members of our church at Concord are in the United Methodist ministry.  Rev. William E. Carlson, now retired, served United Methodist churches in Wisconsin and served as District Superintendent.  Rev. Duane Andrus served United Methodist churches in Wisconsin and is still active.  Rev. Dan Schwerin served United Methodist churches in Wisconsin and also served as District Superintendent for the United Methodist Conference.  He is now serving at the Waukesha United Methodist Church. We know that we are the church and must carry on Christ’s work on earth.  We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the saints who have gone on before – and it is now our duty to fulfill the great mission.  A torch has been passed to us – let’s hope we carry it high and pass it on to future generations.

Service projects:

The church supports mission activities of the United Methodist Conference by our contributions.  Members are active in many of the Concord community events – the Senior Center and Concord’s Historical Society.  The church sponsors an annual rummage sale at the Concord Community Center – again promoting community involvement.  We are generous with contributions to various charitable organizations:  the Jefferson County Christmas Neighbors Project (a project started many years ago by a former minister); Heifer International; disaster relief funds; and others as the need arises.
