Atlantic Center for the Arts’ your word: Teen Creative Writing Residency is a one-of-kind multi-genre summer writing residency that offers 9th - 12th grade teens writing workshops and mentorship by distinguished authors in poetry, fiction, and memoir, on the grounds of a breathtakingly beautiful ecological preserve.

your word: Teen Creative Writing Residency will be held at Atlantic Center from July 25 through August 7, 2010, offering 21 teens from around the country an extraordinary opportunity to explore and expand the power of their individual voices through writing workshops with Master Writers.The program takes place on the east coast of central Florida, at Atlantic Center’s renowned artists-in-residence facility. Located on 69 pristine acres, surrounded by a 2,300 acre preserve, and near New Smyrna’s beautiful white sand beaches and the 57,000 acre Canaveral National Seashore, Atlantic Center is a tranquil yet stimulating setting that has inspired artists from around the world for over a quarter of a century.Teen writers will join three Master Writers-in-Residence, one in each of the following genres — poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction/memoir.Participants will strengthen their skills in a primary genre, while exploring and experimenting with other forms of literature. The mentorship with the Master Writers-in-Residence will be the focus, but the chance to interact with Visiting Writers and other participating young writers will be invaluable.Writing workshops with Master Artists-in-Residence meet Monday-Friday for two hours with additional scheduled time for independent writing. Participants will have the opportunity to focus on one genre, while also exploring the other forms of literature through workshops and conversation. Additional afternoon workshops will focus on a variety of literary topics.In addition to the literary workshops, participants will have the chance to enjoy the local area during their downtime. Activities will include weekend day trips to Canaveral National Seashore and Sea World, evening events with guest writers and readings, an open mic event, and arts workshops will also be on the agenda. Chaperones will be on-site 24-hours a day throughout the residency.
