Inspired by and in memory of former instructor Joie Armstrong, the Armstrong Scholars Program brings together young women, ages 15 to 18, for a truly empowering summer backpacking adventure in the High Sierra. This extraordinary program seeks to inspire young women to reach their highest potential, develop a stronger sense of self and community, and explore their personal connection to nature. Participants venture into the backcountry of Yosemite National Park with highly skilled female educators from Yosemite Institute and our sister campus, Headlands Institute, for an expedition of discovery, leadership, and personal challenge.
Each participant receives a $1,500 scholarship provided by the Joie Armstrong Memorial Fund that covers all but $150 of the program fees. Twelve young women will be chosen based on the strength of their applications and the recommendations of supportive educators and community leaders. Participation is limited to insure a quality experience for everyone involved.
