Science and Math Detectives: Ms. Wu and teaching assistants
Science detectives will examine a make-believe crime scene and conduct a variety of
hands-on forensic science tests on the evidence to solve the mystery crime; Math
detectives will promote their thinking skills and enhance their Mathematical learning
through problem solving with concrete materials and student writing to develop the
childrens' understanding of Math concepts.
Art with Action: Ms. Wu and teaching assistants
For young kids summer afternoons can be a drag. Not so in Art with Action. This class
will provide your youngster with the opportunity to enhance both their small and large
motor skills. The afternoon will consist of PE style games like tag, four square and
capture the flag as well as time to explore different styles of art and music in a positive
learning environment.
Extended After Care and Open Computer Lab
Extended After Care and Open Computer Lab for Summer Enrichment from 3:30 to 5:00
provides activities and access to the Macintosh computer lab under the watchful eye of
Mr. Ekedahl and a staff of high school and college counselors.
Traditional Sports: Mr. Caruana
Taught by one of CSUS’ basketball coaches and PE instructors, this class will focus on
building students’ skills in games like soccer, tennis, basketball and baseball. Don’t
worry, this class will not be all drills, but instead use fun and competitive games to
improve student skills.
Math Power: Ms. Rea
Students will improve problem solving, critical thinking, and basic math skills to
reinforce or fill in gaps from this past school year -- and get a jump-start on next fall’s
math curriculum. Real-life situations used in the problems encourage growth in criticalthinking
and reasoning skills. The NCTM Content Standards are targeted with lessons in
numbers and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, and data analysis and
probability. Throughout the course students will learn mental math tricks, solve riddles
and logic puzzles.
Science of Structures: Ms. Hudick
In this hands-on science class, students will explore the physics of the world around us.
Students will build towers and bridges and create boats and cars all while developing a
better understanding of stability, strength, hydrodynamics and aerodynamics. Famous
inventors and engineers will be discussed through stories and writing.
Myths and Legends: Mr. Webb
In this course, students will study the mythology of many cultures, including Asian,
Celtic, African, Latin American and ancient Greek. Students will search for universal
themes and qualities that make myths timeless. Each student will then write an original
myth and share it with the class.
Public Speaking: TBD
Many adults fear speaking in public more than the thought of dying! It is not so bad in
this fun class where you will gain confidence, learn how to breathe and articulate clearly,
laugh while learning tongue twisters, and possibly pick up a new dialect.
