The SHU Community Music Program hosted Winds ‘n Jazz in June from June 15 – 21. This weeklong residence camp for young musicians included private music instruction, participation in woodwind ensembles and/or jazz combos as well as history and theory classes. “I feel like I’ve gotten better every time,”says April
Guest, a participant of 3 years who is heading to Seton Hill as a freshman in the fall.
Ninth grade students through graduating seniors are eligible to register for Winds ‘n Jazz in June, and younger students are accepted by teacher referral. “My playing
has definitely improved as a result,”says Rachael Sarver, a Hempfield High School student. “And it’s helpful to spend time with other musicians who share your goals.”
This camp is chamber music at its best, with small ensembles, friendly faculty, and a whole week to enjoy it!
Throughout the week, campers perform in small mixed instrument ensembles, same instrument ensembles, jazz combos (including pianists), and have classes and participate in special topics, including drum circles, music theory & history, movement/exercise, reed-making class for double reeds, and piano skills.
All campers receive private coaching on their instrument. All applicants entering grade 8 through the graduating class of 2010 will be accepted. Younger students can be accepted by teacher referral.
