Description

When I relocated with my family to Qualicum Beach in 2004, I knew that I was going to want to be spending my summers at home. Qualicum is a summer holiday paradise and rather than spend the beach season on the road I decided to open a little summer music camp program which would allow me more home time, and also bring the musical message to local students and listeners. The first year I ran 3 small camps for a total of a little fewer than 20 students. Some jazz, some basic musicianship/world music, some original, some classic, the program was a leap of faith for all involved, but resulted in some marvelous music and wonderful relationships between participants, faculty, parents and other family members. We also prepared and ate all of our meals together. This was a departure from most, if not all, music camps and we all had a blast figuring it out.

In the intervening years we have grown, shaped, refined (but not too much). Our programs have changed shape, and also increased in number. This year for the first time we are offering 5 different programs, including the debut of our Classical String, and Vocal workshop with the amazing Dee Daniels.

Over the years we have been blessed with visits from teachers Jodi Proznick, Chet and Jim Doxas, Michel Donato, Seamus Blake, Ken Lister, Don Clark, and many others. This year we are thrilled, as always, to be welcoming Christine and Ingrid Jensen and drummer Jon Wikan back to PDAMCA, teaching in the Intermediate Jazz camp. After the Vocal week with Dee Daniels (and accompanist Don Thompson), the Adult Week attendees will work with Ian McDougall, Don Thompson, Oliver Gannon, Neil Swainson, and Phil Dwyer, in a variety of master class, small group, and jam session environments.

In our Advanced Jazz, and Classical String programs the participants will be working separately, and together, exploring a variety of repertoire and musical concepts. This week, the last of PDAMCA 2010 builds towards the exciting Music In The Garden concerts on Aug 14/15 at the renowned Milner Gardens. For our Advanced Jazz and Classical Strings programs we have assembled an illustrious and enthusiastic group of performers and educators from across Canada and the Pacific Northwest. Check out our programs and faculty pages to learn more about them.

The culinary component of PDAMCA varies by the camp, and the circumstances. Some sessions are a little more hands-on, sometimes we sit back and let the pros take care of us. Our Executive Chef, Trevor Hooper, has big-league restaurant chops and is a musician himself so he has been an important part of the growth of PDAMCA the last few years. Last year we also enjoyed visits from Chris Mooney and Peter Zambri, who left us with a year’s worth of tasty memories after their fabulous Moroccan, Spanish, and Italian feasts. I’ve been know to chip in on the culinary action from time to time and look forward to getting involved again this year.

The fact that we have campers coming for their 3rd and 4th time says a lot about the experience that we offer at PDAMCA. Take a look around the website and drop us a line if you have any questions. We look forward to
seeing you at PDAMCA 2010.
