BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Campbell junior outside hitter Emily Werner has been named to the 2009 North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association's (NCCSIA) All-State team by the state's sports information directors.
Werner led the Camels in kills and points through the 2009 season at 2.88 and 3.41per game, respectively, as Campbell notched its most wins since 2001 and set a school record for conference wins. The Camels went 17-15 with a 10-10 Atlantic Sun record. Campbell was also 13-6 away from Buies Creek, as one of the A-Sun's best road teams.
The Sarasota, Fla. native posted 10 points in 22 contests, reaching 10 kills on 18 occasions that included 14 A-Sun matches. Werner tallied eight double-doubles during her junior season, and has gathered 20 on her career.
After leading the Camels and establishing career-highs in kills, attacks and points, the junior now stands 10th on the CU all-time points per set list, and ranks just outside the top-10 in kills, attacks and points. Werner also finished 10th in the A-Sun in points per set, at 3.41 a frame in 2009.
Werner notched a career-high 22 digs against Jacksonville at home, adding 16 kills, and established another career mark against North Florida with seven blocks, adding 10 kills and seven digs.
Other highlights from Werner's stellar junior campaign included her 21 kill, 13 dig performance against East Tennessee State, where the outside hitter also posted four blocks and four aces for 27.0 points, hitting .367. Werner added 18 kills and 19 digs against High Point early in the year.
Werner marks the fourth Camel to receive NCCSIA All-State accolades, and the third ever to earn first team honors. Femi Alabi (2005-07) and Rachel Templin (2003-06) collected first team honors in 2006. Melissa Harvey (2006-07) was also honored in 2006 as a second team member.
Werner's recognition adds to the accolades the Camels have already amassed for the 2009 season. Senior middle blocker Ashley Weers and freshman outside hitter Jordan Reaves both collected All Atlantic Sun honors, with Weers being named to the league's first team and Reaves to the all-freshmen squad.
North Carolina freshman setter Cora Harms, UNC Asheville junior outside hitter Kelsey Benorden, UNCA middle Lauren Ficker, Elon sophomore middle Caroline Lemke, Elon sophomore right side Traci Stewart and UNCA senior libero Raquel Miotto rounded out the team.
