The AAU Girls' Basketball Program was established in 1972 as part of the AAU Junior Olympic program. Prior to 1972, the AAU Men's and Women's Committee conducted basketball championships, which included a single junior division. The National Championships started in two age divisions (15u &18u) with eight teams in each and have expanded to include (8/u through 19/u) plus the Junior Olympic Games.
The North Carolina Girl’s Basketball program began in 1983 as one event for the 18U age division held in Charlotte at Garinger High School during the 19U boy’s basketball event. 3 teams competed for the Championship in a double elimination tournament with a Union County team taking the trophy. In 1990, Bill Christy was chosen to take the Chair from among the four participating clubs. During his tenure, the program has grown to a maximum of 206 teams participating in 12 DQT events in which North Carolina teams have attended National Championships in record numbers.
