Description

The UAH women's basketball program began in 1977 under the leadership of Dennis Killips, UAH's Director of Athletics at the time. From 1977-80, the program was a member of the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), and became members of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in 1981. UAH stayed members of the NAIA until 1986 when the entire athletic program at UAH became members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and competed in Division II.

Killips chose former Johnson High School basketball coach Bonnie Pike to be the first Lady Charger basketball team. Pike coached the Lady Chargers for three full seasons. Killips took over the reigns of the program after Pike posted an 0-10 mark at the holiday break of 1980. Under Killips, the Lady Chargers went 11-9 the rest of the way and wound up qualifying for the NAIA regional tournament. The Lady Chargers would lose in the first round of the tournament and finished the season 11-20. Killips continued to coach the team through the 1981-82 season, leading the Lady Chargers to the regional finals before losing to Berry College on the road. During the season, the Lady Chargers attained national ranking for the first time in the program's history. Seven of the team's eight losses were to nationally ranked teams. The Lady Chargers advanced to the finals of the regional tournament, losing to Berry College in the finals in Rome, GA. At the end of the 1982 season, Killups turned the program over to his assistant Donna Caldwell Dunaway, who was also a two-year Lady Charger letterwinner.

UAH competed in District 27 of the NAIA, showing well each year. In 1983 UAH won the district title and hosted the regional tournament at Spragins Hall. The Lady Chargers captured the region title and traveled to Kansas City, Mo. to compete in the NAIA National Championship Tournament. The Lady Chargers lost to Southwestern Oklahoma 80-68 in the Championship final. Coach Dunaway was later inducted into the UAH Charger Hall of Honor for her outstanding contributions as a player and as a coach.

Debbie McBeath was hired as head coach in 1985 and she coached the team until 1987 when Leila Nabors took over the program. Nabors also served as UAH's volleyball coach. After she relinquished the reigns in 1989, Joe Hagan was hired and coached the Lady Chargers for the next four seasons.

UAH joined the Gulf South Conference in 1992 and began conference play in 1993-94. Tia Sossamon, a former AIAW and NCAA national championship team member, became head coach in 1993.

After Sossamon's departure, Coach Connie Guinn joined the UAH family last season as head women's basketball coach. In her first two seasons, Guinn has a record of 19-33. Last season, Guinn's Lady Chargers just missed out on a trip to the GSC Tournament. The Lady Chargers finished the season with a record of 12-14.

In July of 2001, a new era of UAH women's basketball began under Andy Blackston. In his first season, Blackston guided the Lady Chargers to a 14-12 finish and nearly a birth in the GSC tournament. In 2003, the Lady Chargers earned their first bid to the GSC tournament since 1997.

After leading the Lady Chargers back to the GSC tournament, Blackston moved on to Division I to take over the reigns at Austin Peay State University. He was replaced by volunteer assistant coach Jeff Keller, who ushered the Lady Chargers into the 2003-04 season.

In his first season, Keller led the Lady Chargers to a 12-14 record and fell just short of returning to the GSC tournament. However, despite finishing the season with a 8-20 record in 2004-05, the Lady Chargers earned a spot in the tournament. The Lady Chargers almost advanced to the second round, but fell short 63-60 to Arkansas-Monticello. In 2005-06, not only did the Lady Chargers make a return trip to the GSC tournament, but they finished with a winning record of 14-13.

The Lady Chargers suffered through a brutal 6-21 campaign in 2006-07 after playing the entire season with only seven healthy players in most cases. However, two of the five first team All-GSC honorees came from UAH. Then, in 2007-08, the Lady Chargers turned things around. Although they would finish the season at 12-16, the Lady Chargers earned a spot in the GSC tournament. They would face a familiar foe in the opening round of the tournament and again fall short to Arkansas-Monticello 71-66.

The injury bug returned to bite the Lady Chargers in 2008-09, decimating the the lineup for much of the season. The result was a long 7-20 campaign and the end of the Keller era at UAH. In the spring of 2009, Roy Heintz assumed the reigns of the Lady Charger basketball program.
