The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released its 2010 All-America teams on Tuesday (June 8) with two California women's tennis players honored. Sophomore Jana Juricova and junior Marina Cossou each received All-American certificates in singles. It was Juricova's third overall honor coming off singles and doubles recognition as a freshman in 2009. Cossou was also a singles ITA All-American in 2008 as a freshman. The two certificates give the Golden Bears a total of 81 ITA All-Americans (63 singles, 18 doubles) since Barrie Bulmore brought home Cal's first such honor in 1982.
Both Cossou and Juricova were also selected for Pacific-10 All-Conference first team honors earlier in the season. In addition, Juricova earned a spot on the conference all-academic first team while Cossou received academic honorable mention. The two Bears also combined to receive three conference player-of-the-week awards this season to push Cal's conference-high total to 12 all-time.
Juricova completed her sophomore campaign as the nation's No. 2-ranked player and as the NCAA singles championship runner-up. Her team-leading 44-7 singles mark included a perfect 7-0 record in Pac-10 duals and a 23-3 overall record in all duals while playing exclusively at the top court. Her run to the singles title match included a remarkable 19-match winning streak through which she dropped just three sets on her way to defeating 14 ranked players. Juricova became the first Cal player in program history to capture the singles title at the 2009 ITA National Indoor Championships and was a runner-up for both the singles and doubles titles at the 2009 Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championship.
Cossou held the No. 17 ranking in the final ITA singles poll and posted a 30-11 singles record with a 16-5 mark in duals while playing exclusively at the second court. She was the runner-up for 2009 Cal Nike Invitational singles crown and was one of three Bears to receive a bid to the NCAA singles championship field. Cossou advanced to the singles quarterfinal round in all three major fall tournaments; the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship, the Wilson/ITA Regional Championship and the ITA National Indoor Championship.
