Tulsa's Marcelo Arevalo and Ashley Watling lost in the second round of singles while Philip Stephens and Watling fell in the first round of doubles as the Golden Hurricane men's tennis team was eliminated on Thursday afternoon at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships in Athens, Ga.
Watling, the 60th-ranked player in the country, lost 6-2, 6-0 to 14th-ranked Sanam Singh of Virgina in the singles second round to end his tournament run.
The sophomore from Ipswich, England fell behind 4-0 in the first set before finally taking a game from Singh, but the junior All-American responded to take the frame by a 6-2 score. Singh swept through the second set en route to a 6-0 win.
Watling finishes the season with a 21-11 singles record, including an 8-4 mark against nationally-ranked opponents. He was Tulsa's only 20-match winner during the 2009-10 campaign.
No. 42-ranked Arevalo also saw his NCAA tournament come to an end in the second round with a tough 7-5, 6-1 loss to 45th-ranked Rhyne Williams of Tennessee.
Arevalo was on the verge of winning the first set when he took a 5-4 lead, but Williams claimed the next three games to take the opening frame, 7-5. Williams rode that momentum into the second set, which he won by a 6-1 score.
Arevalo finishes the season with a 9-7 record, which includes a 4-6 mark against nationally-ranked opposition.
In the first round of doubles action, 24th-ranked Philip Stephens and Ashley Watling lost a 6-3, 7-5 decision to 22nd-ranked Brad Cox and Eric Quigley of Kentucky.
