Husky women's tennis standouts Venise Chan and Denise Dy were both named All-Americans today by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, putting a cap on two of the best individual seasons in UW history.
Chan and Dy both earned the honor in singles play. Players can also earn doubles All-America awards. Washington was one of just six programs with two singles All-Americans along with California, Baylor, Florida, UCLA, and Miami. Even NCAA Champion Stanford had just one singles All-American.
The awards are a poorly kept secret for many of the winners, as there are three possible criteria and Chan and Dy met one of them a month ago when the NCAA individual participants were announced. Criteria includes being one of the top 16 seeds in the NCAA Singles Championships, reaching the Round of 16 in the singles tourney, or finishing the year ranked in the Top-20 by the ITA.
Chan met all three requirements, while Dy checked off two of the three. In the final singles rankings, also released today, Dy came in at No. 13 and Chan came in at No. 15. Those are the third- and fourth-highest year-end rankings in school history. Kristina Kraszewski finished sixth in 2000 and ninth in 2001.
Chan and Dy are the fifth and sixth All-Americans in Husky history. They join Kraszewski (1998, 2000-01), Claire Carter (2001-04), Darija Klaic (2002-03), and Dea Sumantri (2003-04). This marks the first time UW has ever had two singles All-Americans in one season.
