The Oregon women's tennis team dropped a Pac-10 conference dual match, 5-2, to No. 12 ranked California on Friday afternoon inside the Student Tennis Center. The Ducks fall to 7-14 (1-6 Pac-10) with just Sunday's battle against Stanford still on the schedule. California improves to 15-4 (3-1 Pac-10) with the victory.
While the Ducks slipped up against the Bears, Pavlina Smatova had the best win of her career, knocking off Cal's No. 15 ranked Marina Cossou, 6-4, 0-6, 10-7 at No. 2 singles. It was only Cossou's third loss of the season and first in Pac-10 play. It was the highest ranked opponent an Oregon player has defeated this season.
Patricia Skowronski also won for the Ducks, 6-4, 2-6, 10-6, at No. 4 singles. Both Oregon wins came in 10-point superbreaker third sets after Cal had clinched the dual with their fourth point of the day. Cal won the doubles point and took the first three singles matches of the day.
Oregon will play it's last match of the season against No. 11 rated Stanford on Sunday afternoon, with the match set to begin at 11 a.m. Poor weather will put the match inside the Student Tennis Center behind Mac Court but if the weather improves, the match will be held outdoors at the 18th Street Tennis Courts.
