GENERAL CAMP INFORMATION

Camp Cayuga is a private coed residential summer camp for children ages 5 to 15.  The camp is located on a secluded 350-acre estate in the Pocono Mountains of Northeast Pennsylvania, just outside the village of Honesdale.  It’s a 3-hour drive from New York City and Philadelphia. 

QUALITY & EXPERIENCE

Camp Cayuga was purchased in 1964 by Mike Buynak, who turned over the full-time directorship in 1983 to his son, Brian.  The Buynaks have owned & operated summer camps since 1957 and have earned a fine reputation over 50 years for providing healthy, safe, fun-filled summers for children!  Cayuga is an ACA accredited camp and has exceeded all standards set for safety, personnel, and program. 

GUARANTEE TO FIRST-TIME CAMPERS

Everyone has fun at Camp Cayuga - that’s our promise to you!  We specialize in first-time campers and back-up our promise with “Cayuga’s First-Time Camper Guarantee”. Our guarantee provides for a full prorated tuition refund to any first-time camper departing prior to the conclusion of his or her registered session. That is, we will refund the excess of tuition after deducting the ordinary charges for the period your child remained in camp.  That's a promise! 

SEPARATE TEEN CAMPUS

Cayuga’s property is divided into 2 campuses.  With two separate campuses, we can provide two separate programs geared to the different age groups on each campus.  Teen Campus houses campers entering 8th to 10th grade who are 13 years old (or older).  Teen Campus is reserved exclusively for teenagers.  Junior Campus houses campers entering 1st to 8th grade who are 13 years old or younger.  Campers entering 8th grade, who are 13 years of age before arrival, have the option to reside on either campus.  

CREATE YOUR OWN ACTIVITY SCHEDULE

Campers, entering 5th grade & higher, select their own activities each morning after breakfast.  Campers sign-up with their friends, so they can attend the same activities together that day. There are over 60 activities offered every day!  Cayuga’s Elective Program provides campers the opportunity to explore their individual interests and pursue those interests he/she finds most challenging. 

JUNIOR DIVISION ACTIVITY SCHEDULE

Campers, entering 4th grade & lower, participate in the Junior Activity Program.  Each Junior cabin is provided with its own weekly activity schedule, which is geared to the age and gender of the cabin group. The schedule is different each day of the week!  Campers travel together as a “cabin group” to activities under the direct supervision of their counselor.

ENROLLMENT INFORMATION

The camper population is limited to 390 campers.  To register your child at Cayuga, complete the on-line camper enrollment application or the hard-copy application.  Cayuga offers flexible sessions including 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks.  Diversity and nonrepetition of the program are two guidelines we use in planning the summer's calendar of events.  Sibling credits and "early registration" discounts are available. 

CAYUGA ARTS PROGRAMS

Cayuga’s Arts Program features a broad spectrum of activities which provide campers the opportunity to artistically express themselves. The Arts Program is split into 3 departments: Creative Arts, Performing Arts, and Media Arts. 

CREATIVE ARTS

Cayuga’s Creative Arts Program includes a variety of art projects including: Arts & Crafts, Pottery, Pottery Wheel Operation, Ceramics (glazing & firing), Clay Work (sculpting), T-Shirt Creations (tye dyeing, air-brushing, fabric painting, & silk screening), Painting (water color & acrylics), Sketching (charcoal pencils), Drawing, Jewelry Making, Beading, Basket Weaving, Lanyards & Braiding, Macramé, Papier Mache & Plaster Projects, Wood Projects, Copper Enameling, Block Printing, Needle Craft, Mask-Making, Decoupage, Model Rocketry (building & launching Estes Rockets), and Nature Crafts.

PERFORMING ARTS

Cayuga’s Performing Arts Program provides an opportunity for self-expression. The Arts Program includes the Flying Trapeze and Circus Arts as well as 3 other main programs: Drama, Dance, and Music. The DRAMA PROGRAM includes instruction in basic acting techniques and offers the serious “actor or actress” the opportunity to join the Drama Club, which performs two productions during the summer.  Other campers can perform on stage during evening activities, such as: Cabin Skit Night, MTV Night, Stars in Your Eyes, The Big Talent Show, and Puttin’ on the Hits, just to name a few.  The DANCE PROGRAM includes instruction in modern dance, social dance, ballet, jazz, as well as yoga, zumba, and aerobic classes.  There are intercamp dance competitions scheduled every summer too!  The MUSIC PROGRAM includes basic instruction in guitar, keyboards, and singing/choir.  You can join the Choir Club which performs on stage during the summer!

MEDIA ARTS

Cayuga’s Media Arts Program focuses on four major activities: Photography, Video Camera Filming, Radio DJ Broadcasting, and Creative Writing for the Camp Newspaper.  The PHOTOGRAPHY ACTIVITY includes instruction in camera use, darkroom procedures, developing negatives, and printing photographs.  The VIDEO CAMERA FILMING ACTIVITY includes instruction on how to properly operate a video camera and create video movies. The RADIO BROADCASTING ACTIVITY is most popular with campers who enjoy being a DJ.  Campers are instructed by Cayuga’s Disc Jockey who has DJ experience at the college-level.  The CAMP NEWSPAPER ACTIVITY provides campers with an opportunity to express themselves through creative writing. Campers voluntarily select “assignments” which involve researching the facts, conducting personal interviews, and writing a summary article for the camp newspaper.

QUALITY INSTRUCTION

The Creative & Performing Arts Programs are headed-up by the Creative Arts Director and Performing Arts Director. The Creative Arts Staff includes 8 to 10 university-level instructors who are majoring in art and/or theatre who have documented experience teaching art to children. The Performing Arts Staff includes 6 to 8 university-level instructors who are majoring in theatre and/or have documented experience teaching drama to children.  Instruction is patient and geared to the camper’s individual skill level.  The instructors are talented and experienced in teaching all levels of art expression to children of all ages. 

ARTS PROGRAM FACILITIES

CREATIVE ARTS: The Creative Arts Program features: Junior Campus Creative Arts Pavilion (7500 square feet), Teen Campus Arts Pavilion (1950 square feet), Pottery Room (with 15 pottery wheels), Kiln Room (with 4 kilns), Photography Darkroom (fully-equipped), Sculpting Room (for clay work), and a T-Shirt Creations Room (for air-brushing, fabric painting, tye-dyeing).  PERFORMING ARTS:  Acting Classes take place in Cayuga’s Performing Arts Building & the Teen Campus Rec Center. Dance Classes take place in the Dance Studio which features wall to wall mirrors, ballet bar, step-up blocks, and floor mats. There is a Dance Studio located on each campus. MEDIA ARTS: Photography, Video Filming, Creative Writing, and Music Classes take place outdoors on campus.  Radio DJ Broadcasting takes place in our AM radio stations.  There is a Radio Broadcasting Station located on each campus.

CAMP STAFF

Our success is directly related to the quality of our staff.  Each camper is under the close care and direct supervision of at least 2 cabin counselors.  Our youngest counselor is entering his sophomore year of college.  There is no Junior Staff Program at Cayuga.  Our Division Directors assist the cabin counselors, and will frequently communicate with our campers' parents when deemed necessary.  In addition, there are over 40 Senior Staff Members who direct and supervise various areas of the camp's program, and stand ready to work with your child on a one-to-one basis to make his/her summer camp experience a successful one.  The staff/camper ratio is 1 to 4.
