ROHNERT PARK, Calif- In recognition of her efforts on the soccer field and in the classroom, Sonoma State University junior Taylor Colacion has been awarded a certificate for the 2010 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports-Scholar Award for outstanding Academic and Athletic Achievement.
Colacion, a native La Habra, has started all 41 matches for the Seawolves' women's soccer team in her first two years at Sonoma State. As a defender, Colacion has scored a goal and notched four assists while helping SSU to one of the best defensive teams in the CCAA.
The late Arthur Ashe, Jr. was considered to be one of the best United States tennis players in his time, winning three grand slam titles, and was also known for his work as an active civil rights leader before he passed away in 1993.
To be nominated for the Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports-Scholar Award, student-athletes are asked to submit an essay detailing the issues in diversity surrounding their respective schools.
