Established in 1896, the YMCA did not receive a permanent home until the Anderson family property became the first home around 1915. In 1926, a capital campaign resulted in the building still in use today at 360 Main Street in Hackensack.

Built as the “Y for All,” the facility would be the site for programs for men, women boys and girls. Over the years, responding to community needs, the Y has been home to a variety of programs and activities including a cafeteria, a bowling alley, archery and rifle ranges, a stage with an active theater group, and dinners and dances for young adults.

In 1930, in Harriman State Park, the YMCA began a summer camping program for boys. There are now three camping programs for boys and girls. Resident Camp Michikamau, and Day Camps Kahagon and Oratam provide lake front programs in a beautiful setting. There are also family camping weekends that provide a wholesome family experience at Camp Michikamau.

Begun in 1979, the Preschool Day Care and After School programs have become an important part of the YMCA. At the Main Street Building, the preschool program provides opportunities for 60 children, 2 ½ to 5 years old. The After School program, now offered in cooperation with the Hackensack Board of Education, provides a program for children in the elementary schools.

The Aquatics program offers a variety of year-round swimming opportunities. From youth and adult instruction to the youth swim team, to family recreation and adult lap swimming, there is something for everyone. There are a number of wellness programs including preschool and youth instruction, an adult wellness center and senior exercise programs that are also available at a number of Bergen County senior centers.
