Description

We hope to be able to give you a brief tour of the camp and the info you need to decide if this is where your son might want to spend part of his next summer vacation. Let's start the tour...

Camp Wildwood has flourished for over five decades because of three elements: its people, its program, and its philosophy. Camp directors Mark and Peter Meyer have owned and operated Camp Wildwood since 1980. They believe in a hands-on approach, meeting every day with their carefully selected administration and staff to discuss program improvements, daily activities, intercamp games, and remedies for any of yesterday's problems. The Meyer brothers believe that the best way to teach children is to work and learn along with them. That is why they know each boy by name.

Every night, as they say goodnight to each camper, they learn more about the individual. After all, it is at night, when the day's activities have ended that kids have time to talk about their problems, their concerns, and their successes.

This personal interest that Mark and Peter show in the boys’ growth and maturity brings generation after generation back to Wildwood. In fact Mark first came to Wildwood as a wild and crazy 10 year old and later returned as a staff member. He went on to become part of the administration, and finally assumed owner/directorship in 1980.

Mark and Peter are both family men. Peter’s children, Michael and Lisa, are older and have gone successfully through the camping process. Mark has two young children, both girls, that have attended a neighboring girl’s camp for the past four summers.

Esther and Lisa Meyer serve as camp mothers. Like Peter and Mark, they too know all the campers. Esther, a New York City Public School Teacher, tutors some of our campers, while Lisa handles some of the sensitive homesick children.

Happiness. Safety. Appreciation. These are the constant goals shaping the philosophy of Wildwood. It is a summer place where competitive and non-competitive boys come together and flourish. They take part in an extraordinary choice of activities that develops both their physical and intellectual skills.

Through the development of these skills and the care of the Wildwood staff, the campers grow to feel safe, confident, and to be appreciated. And in that security, they become members of an extended family that continues to grow generation after generation. It’s a simple philosophy. It’s Wildwood.
