Description
- The Storefront has a student-teacher ratio of 7 to 1, which enables it to meet the individual needs of each of its very diverse students
- The Children's Storefront is an independent, tuition-free school in Harlem serving pre-school through 8th grade.
- Our work is ground in the conviction that every child deserves the opportunity for an excellent education
- The Children's Storefront was re-accredited for ten years in 2004 by the New York State Association of Independent Schools. It is an independent tuition-free school in Harlem that serves preschool through eighth grade students and is located in district Community Board 11 and School District 5. The Harlem community in which we are located is problem-ridden on a number of fronts. The median income is $16,600 and 23 percent of the population is on public assistance. District 11 has the highest concentration of shelters and facilities for drug and alcohol treatment in any community in the Borough of Manhattan.
- TCS faculty is committed to teaching our students in ways that promote active learning, critical thinking and creativity in a rigorous academic environment. We believe this includes a specific body of knowledge, a set of skills and common standards. We are driven by our values and mission. We see our standards and curriculum as a vehicle to achieve that mission. In addition to a strong emphasis on mastery of skills, we build strong personal relationships with our students. We seek to teach them perseverance, tolerance and the ability to reach personal goals.
- Tracking indicates that over 90 percent of Storefront students graduate from high school, in stark contrast to the community rate of 33%. Of the 62 Storefront graduates who are high school age, 60 are still in high school. Over the last several years students have attended private schools that include Buxton School, Brooklyn Friends, Miss Hall's and Northfield Mount Herman in Massachusetts, the Masters School, the Marvelwood School in Connecticut and Holderness in New Hampshire. Parochial schools include Mt. St. Michael's, Xavier, Notre Dame and LaSalle in New York City. Storefront students have gained admission to competitive-entry New York City public schools such as Brooklyn Technical High School, Frederick Douglass Academy and Young Women's Leadership Academy.
