DescriptionCamp Hopewell offers one week-long summer camp session for children and youth with Type 1 Diabetes. This program offers young people the same fun and exciting programming as our summer church camp sessions, including all the great outdoor games and events. In addition to regular camp activities, these sessions include education and guidance to help participants learn how to better control their diabetes and lead a healthier lifestyle. Campers may learn to meet many of their medical needs, such as testing their blood sugar or maintaining their insulin levels, without the aid of an adult. It's a great step to helping them learn to be independent and confident people. Several physicians and nurses volunteer for this program making it a safe and rewarding week for young people. Each summer, Hopewell hires counselors, program and support staff to care for the needs of the campers during their week of camp. Potential staff members apply for a position, are interviewed by a director, undergo a background and reference check and experience 2 weeks of intensive staff training to prepare them for the summer ahead. Staff members enjoy the bond that they develop with each other, as well as the relationships that they nurture with their campers. All staff positions are resident positions. Counselors and support staff reside in cabins with campers, while program staff stay in a staff cabin in close range of the other cabins. Program staff serve as mentors and support for counseling staff. Their team is made up of experienced staff members who have acquired certifications and authorizations in special areas, such as Challenge Course, Archery, Arts and Crafts, Lifeguarding and Nature Studies. Program staff members, called Resource Staff, have been counselors in previous summers and serve as leaders during the summer at camp. Details
