Every summer Camp Birch Hill welcomes 180 to 200 campers per session for 2, 4, or 6 week stays. Campers are able to create their schedules from over 45 different activities through our unique elective based program. The Birch Hill community is an inclusive one dedicated to building self esteem, fostering friendships, and discovering new challenges and adventures.
In 1936 a young man bought the site that is now known as Birch Hill Summer Camp. He thought it was the perfect setting for his dream, a coeducational camp for children. The forests, the lake, the mountain top setting, and the contour of the land added to enhance the camp. From there, he carved out the picturesque camp. The beautiful winding trail to the beach, the circle of the pines, tree-lined paths and twin pines in front of each cabin are examples of how he planted and nurtured the land for the future.
He ran a successful coed camp for five years, and then came World War II. He was drafted, and after four years of active duty in the war, returned injured and tired to a campsite that had remained empty for several years. Soon after the birth of his daughter, he became re-inspired with the camp dream. Once again the camp was up and running, this time as an all girls camp. Again, under the name Birch Hill the camp flourished, with 200 Boston-area girls attending each summer.
The Easter Seals of Manchester, NH then purchased Birch Hill and ran it for twelve seasons. In the fall of 1993, Rich Morell found Birch Hill for sale. Rich and Jayne fell in love with the site and saw its great potential. It had not been in use for several years and needed major repair and care. In 1994, a group of Birch Hill alumni from the previous era came to visit Birch Hill and were kind enough to share the history with us. One of the women, an adorable grandmother, found her name ingrained on a rafter in one of the cabins. It was then that we decided to bring back the original camp name, and we felt very fortunate ever since. Not for a moment have we regretted it.
