Excitement, projects, exceptional people and great times punctuated our 116th year. Our year in review was wet and cool giving the trout another year to grow in numbers and in average size. The fall when we wanted snow was of course dry and warm. Our deer hunters were not as successful as in 2005 or 2004, but some exceptional bucks were taken. Our bear hunters and bird hunters had a good year even though the mast crop was large and both were feeding regularly on the ridges rather than where we were hunting. Highlights: A twister in June cleared the trees from the lodge to the lake (and the dining room of guests).
The island out front will once again be back in the family (65 years later). The cabin on Brown Pond was actually finished (that is when the outhouse is useable). We bought another cabin on the Aroostook River, the Fournier Camp. Our newest cabin for Matt & Jess, was started (I was told when they had a big enough cabin grandchildren would appear you're on Jess). Largest buck 230. Largest trout 5 pounds. Mom celebrates her 70th year working at camp (as a maid she fell in love with my dad here in 1936, married in 1938 and has worked one way or another here ever since). Ellen and I celebrated our 30th year working here and being married. The Good Stuff: We undoubtedly had some of the liveliest fishermen and gung ho hunters in a long time whether they were swimming with the fish or hanging the game high. I had a great time with all of them. The crew changed throughout the year and we kept them hopping. My thanks to all of them (Doug, Lucy, Sarah, Danny, Richard and Elizabeth) who made my life easier and more enjoyable. The guides from May through November kept us laughing.
These top notch woodsmen not only make your lives enjoyable in the woods and on the waters but make ours fun too. They all work as a team with us and man does it show. 2007 should be interesting. We will be finishing cabin projects, adding more canoes in wilderness ponds, cutting new hiking trails, adding more stations to the clays course and clearing brush on Libby Island. We are also proud to introduce our friends, the Hutcheson Family - Mark, Kim, Will, Colton and Morgan who will be full time this summer. We welcome back Jeff, Mike, Bob, Rick, Gary, Joe, Toby throughout the season and our seasonal guides, Boyd, Chuck, Pat, Don, Jay and Paul. Take time to get away from the city lights, take time to breathe some clear air, take time to see the whole night sky, take time to catch a wild trout or stalk wild game, take time to have fun with friends and family. Time is short and priceless.
