Up the hill from Mammoth Lakes lies the entrance to a pristine vacation land along the headwaters of the San Joaquin River. As you drive past Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort, you'll have an opportunity to take a quick side road that offers an overview of the Minarets. Take it. The view is spectacular. You might not know it, but you're on the winding old road that ends at Red's Meadow. On your way, you'll pass by Starkweather Lake, the turnoff to Devil's Postpile
The Mule House Cafe National Monument, Sotcher Lake and the Rainbow Falls trailhead. Just a bit farther is The Resort. This popular facility has cabins that sleep six and motel rooms that sleep four. Per night rate for a party of two: Cabins $150 and Motel rooms $79. Extra persons for either are $10 per night. Cabins are complete with electricity, gas range, coffee pot, refrigerator, dishes, utensils, outside bbq, heater, bathroom with shower, bedding and towels. Motel rooms have a private bathroom with shower. Check-in is 3 p.m. Checkout is 11 a.m. Deposits consist of first night rental charge. The well-stocked General Store has groceries, sporting goods, fishing tackle, sundries and souvenirs. If you're hiking the back-country, you can have a supply package sent to yourself at The Resort. Here's the details. The Mule House Cafe serves up delicious home cooked meals. Both open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. At the pack station you can arrange for a short horseback ride or a back country trip. The resort is located at the comfortable elevation of 7,500 feet. Seven campgrounds are located nearby.
