Michi-Lu-Ca is a Lutheran camp located in northern Michigan. Michi-Lu-Ca’s vision is “through inspired, extraordinary experiences of Christian community, every person who participates in this ministry departs to serve as Jesus served.
How Michi-Lu-Ca Began
When asked about Michi-Lu-Ca's beginnings, Dan Smith, Michi-Lu-Ca’s director said, “It started with a dollar and a handshake when the exploratory team came and walked the Garling lodge property and agreed to buy it in 1963. The team then returned to their congregations and began raising the money to begin Michi-Lu-Ca. The following summer they held their first season of camping and hosted nearly 1,000 guests. Over that summer and the three summers to come, they gradually constructed the many lodges and buildings that make up the facility today. They ran programs ranging from elementary children to family camp programs. The traditions of 1963 live on today in Michi-Lu-Ca’s year-round facility that continues to be updated, renewed, and state of the art.” The camp also has a sister camp called StonyLake that was founded in 1945 along the shores of Lake Michigan.
Why “Michi-Lu-Ca”?
"Michi-Lu-Ca” stands for “Michigan Lutheran Camp.” “Michi-Lu-Ca strives to build a Christian community that exemplifies the teachings of Christ,” said Dan Smith. “In that environment, it doesn’t matter who you are or where you are in your life journey, Michi-Lu-Ca accepts and loves you as you are. Michi-Lu-Ca reminds people what it feels like to be hugged by Christ.”
