DescriptionCamp "R" is located in Laurel Hill State Park, a beautiful mountain setting in Somerset, PA. (Only 1.5 hours away from Pittsburgh)
Boys and girls stay within their own units in the camp. Each unit has cabins that your child will be staying in for their week at Camp "R". Each cabin has 4-6 cabin members and each camper has a spring bed. There are 7-8 cabins per unit. Unit 1 cabins are named after American Indians such as Blackfeet, Iroquois, and Comanche. Unit 2 cabins are named after famous pioneers, such as Annie Oakley, Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie.
For the summer of 2010 the cost to send your child to camp is $275 with an optional fee of $40 for horseback riding for campers 12 years and older. A $25 deposit must accompany the application and the final balance paid in full one week prior to departure. Deposits will not be refunded. The Camp "R" staff consists of our Camp Director, Senior Staff (college age staff), Junior Staff (high school age staff) and CITs (high school age staff). All staff are former Camp "R" campers.
Once you arrive at camp each unit will be split up (Unit 1 for boys, and Unit 2 for girls) and will be taken on a guided tour of the camp. After dinner on your first day you will visit your unit and learn the rules of the camp and the unit.
Staff will do their best to put cabin mates listed on the application together.
Each member of our staff is trained in CPR and First Aid. If more care is needed your child will be transported to the emergency room at Somerset Hospital.
All medications are collected at the Stephen Foster Community Center and at Camp. Medications will be distributed at the appropriate time by the Camp Director.
At one point or another all campers were once the new kid or came not knowing anyone. At Camp "R" their is no need to worry about making friends, the Unit becomes a big family in no time and friendship and courteousness to others is highly stressed. You will also have your cabin mates to hang out with! Details
