Description

Camp Virginia was founded in 1928 by Directors Coach and Mrs. Malcolm Pitt of Richmond, Virginia. The spirit they developed has been continuously nurtured by campers, counselors, alumni and the Honor Council. All phases of camp life, from the activities to the cabins, stress integrity, unselfishness, and gratitude, and these values are enhanced by daily devotions and prayers. Here in the midst of these beautiful Allegheny Mountains and the Maury River, the founders’ goals of reaching each boy, building character, and developing well-rounded campers will always be pursued.

Camp Virginia has been in the Pitt Family for three generations. Their love and guidance of the Camp Virginia campers and counselors for over eighty years has been their trademark in building a diverse, loving, and extensive Camp Virginia Family.

The heart and soul of a great camp is a strong staff, and the counselors at Camp Virginia are first-rate. Many of our counselors began as campers, and there is very little turnover from year to year. Youthful enthusiasm, energy and role modeling is blended with the leadership provided by a core of career educators. Our counselor staff stays in touch year-round. The bond they have as leaders at Camp Virginia will remain with them for the rest of their lives. As Kennedy and Kimball say in Choosing the Right Camp, "The staff here is noticeably more mature than at most camps. It is an advantage that is telling in many ways, but particularly in the overseeing of individual campers.”

CIT’s must have completed 8th or 9th grade and be at least 14 or 15 years old. The Camp Virginia CIT Program, designed for our oldest campers, emphasizes many useful skills: Learning to Teach and Work with People, Responsibility, Leadership, Teamwork, and Thoughtfulness Towards Others.

Our CV Aide Group is our “farm team” for the Junior Counselor and ultimately the SC Staff. We are proud of the numbers of this age group who consistently return to Camp Virginia with the intent of serving as JC’s and SC’s someday. In addition to training sessions, they help in favorite activities they choose, assist in the cabins, and have fun and camaraderie as a group. Our CIT’s have more responsibility, but also more privileges than the younger campers.
