The Human Resources School was established in 1962 to educate severely disabled children who could not attend their neighborhood schools. Founded by Henry Viscardi, Jr. and supported by public and private initiatives, the tuition-free school was the only one of its kind in the world. Renamed the Henry Viscardi School in honor of its founder, the school:
- Enrolls approximately 194 students in grades K through 12.
- Students are referred from 56 school districts on Long Island, Westchester and all five boroughs of New York City.
- A state-accredited institution of learning, the Henry Viscardi School awards Regents diplomas.
- In classes that do not exceed 9 students, one teacher and one teaching assistant instruct the children in the same subjects as those provided at any other public school.
- All students are classified for special education and provided services mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
- The children from the Henry Viscardi School have severe disabilities requiring a specialized educational setting with medical supports.
- This barrier-free school addresses the individual needs of every student, and is designated as a special education school with specific Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) diplomas for students when needed.
Beyond the traditional academic education, HVS offers innovative programs to help students develop the skills necessary for success in adulthood.
- Internship programs for secondary students
- Ongoing assistive technology evaluations and consultations
