ellington offers a college counseling, rather than a college placement, program. The difference is important. At Wellington, the focus is on each student and his or her talents, interests, and needs, not on how many colleges of what kind have accepted how many applications. The College Counseling program at The Wellington School, like a Wellington education, represents a balance between process and outcome. The desired result – the best possible college experience and future preparation for each individual student – is realized as a result of an extensive college search process.
Wellington's College Counseling process is personalized through early and sustained communication and contact. Staff members help students form their college lists, discuss ways to enhance their chances of college acceptance, assist them in preparing and submitting successful applications, give them information and support related to standardized testing, and encourage them to take advantage of various people and print resources.
Wellington’s College Counseling process begins in the freshman year, when students attend two meetings that focus on the importance of their Upper School performance and on college entrance requirements. A series of group meetings is held each year for all other students, and several individual appointments are scheduled with all juniors and seniors. Also, a large number and wide variety of college representatives visit school to meet with students and College Counseling staff members.
Several meetings are held for parents during the school year and much is communicated to them, as well as to their children, through mailings, the college counseling website, and announcements at school.
