Description

Green Mountain Camp had its beginnings when a survey was conducted to detennine the health of children in rural and urban areas. As reported by Sarah Bradley Gamble in the dedication of the Grace Holbrook Haskell Infirmary, the results of this survey exploded the myth that rural children had the best in health, diet and living conditions.

Sarah Bradley Gamble had just graduated from high school. She adored sports and wanted to spend the summer at a local exclusive camp with some of her classmates. However, because of the survey, her parents felt that Sarah could best serve the community by working with the girls in the area.

Sarah's father discussed the survey results with Joseph Lee, a close friend and founder of the playground movement that became known as National Recreation and then International Recreation Association. Joseph Lee offered to back the founding of a local camp if Sarah and Grace Holbrook Haskell would accept the responsibility of running the camp. Thus was founded Green Mountain Camp for Girls.

Over the past eighty-seven years, Green Mountain Camp has been nonprofit and has seen many changes in the programs it has offered. Starting in 1917 the focus was instruction and education in the arts and crafts, improved methods of argiculture, horticulture, household arts, dietetics and nursing, through gymnastics, horseback riding and drama. Today through continued development the emphasis is on providing a healthy and safe environment to promote well-being and self-esteem, to build confidence and friendships, to learn a spirit of community and fellowship, and to provide, along with the educational programs, memories that will last a lifetime.

Weare proud to have added to this year's program an emphasis on fitness, healthy life choices, and personal well-being. We have a number of special work projects involving carpentry and repair skills, painting and various camp upgrades. We encourage the girls to take part in the camp's   overall improvements. We plan to clean out our stream, build window boxes for cabins, paint "thematic" benches and make creative new fencing. We believe that working and playing together leads to positive and productive opportunities. Our spirit creates a powerful sense of community.
