Description

At the Ranch, teens discover the great rewards of working within a family of people, developing trust toward one another, and earning respect. Real change happens on this historic horse and cattle ranch as students learn the value of a day's work, cooperation with others, and compassion toward their fellow man.

The uniqueness of the working cattle ranch as a residential treatment program is the staff working side-by-side with the students to accomplish the tasks that need to be done, while building strong relationships and teaching the students real life skills. The ranch takes the students out of their environment of television, music, and video games and gets them excited about the natural environment, excited about learning, and excited about their physical and mental capabilities.

The animals on the ranch play a vital role in teaching the students to think outside themselves, to love and care for others, and give without expecting something in return. Students learn to work together with peers and adults, work smart and use time productively. They learn what it really means to be responsible, the importance of consistency, respect for life, and the impact they have on others. It connects them with something outside of themselves and teaches them empathy. When the day is done and the students are tired they can look back at the fence they built, the hay they hauled, or the calf they bottle fed and take pride in what they have accomplished. What better way is there to help these young people realize their capabilities and increase their self-confidence?

It feels good to be productive. It feels good to be a part of something. It feels good to be responsible. It feels good to work to a point where we are trusted with responsibility. Turn-About Ranch does this and more. As one student said while hauling hay, "I had to have help the first time, but now I can do it by myself". The ranch environment teaches the students how to work together, care for each other, and become a productive and contributing part of their family and their community.
