Description
Since 1924, the camp has been providing a residential camping experience for about 600 children between the ages of 6 and 13 who would not normally be able to go to a sleep-away camp each summer. Kiddie Keep Well Camp began as a Fresh Air Focused Camp in 1924, and was renamed after Senator John E. Toolan, who served the people of New Jersey from 1933-1948. Dedicated to providing summertime fun and enjoyment to the less privileged children of Middlesex County, Kiddie Keep Well is the only camp of its kind in New Jersey and one of the oldest in the nation. Located in Roosevelt Park, the Camp has room to accommodate 175 children at a time. There are two swimming pools, nine cabins, an administrative building, and a learning center. Each summer the camp accepts about 600 children from an applicant pool of 800 to 1000 children for one of four 12-day sessions at no cost to the families. The camp asks school nurses to recommend students to the camp, and also receives referrals from guidance counselors, principals and the New Jersey Department of Youth and Family Services. We look for children who would not otherwise be able to attend a summer camp. In addition, many of our campers live with physical, emotional, drug or alcohol abuse, or special health problems. Children who attend the camp participate in activities like swimming, arts and crafts, sports, nature, campfires, dance and drama. We also hold fire-safety lessons, sessions on anger management, self-esteem and other character-building skills led by a social worker employed by the camp. The Camp is accredited by the American Camping Association, and licensed by the State Department of Health. We are also a member of both Camp America and Camp Counselors USA, which are two organizations that screen applicants from different countries. There is a 50/50 split between the number of American counselors vs. the number of overseas counselors.

There are three weeks to choose from, one each in June, late August, and Early September. Each camping period is 5 days long, focuses on health and wellness, and supports socialization among the seniors as they engage in healthy and enjoyable activities. Where your dollars go: |
In 1924, a group of area citizens started Kiddie Keep Well Camp to give disadvantaged children, some with minor health problems, an outdoor experience under the watchful eye of professional counselors. Each summer about 600 campers spend 2 weeks swimming, playing sports, doing arts and crafts and nature study, and eating nutritious meals, all at no cost to their families. We are proud of our many years of continuous service to these kids. Nature Center and Camp rentals help defray the costs of Kiddie Keep Well and let us serve more children. |
