Founded in 1955, Camp Small Valley is nestled on 762 acres in the wooded hills of upper Dauphin County about 30 miles north of Harrisburg. Accomodations range from modern year round heated units to rustic cabins and tents. Facilities include a riding stable and ring, swimming pool with bubble beach area, and close access to the Appalachian Trail. Small Valley meets the requirements of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Girl Scouts of the USA. A state of the art science facility is located on the property. The Star (Science, Technology, and Adventure Researchers) Center teaches science in a fun camp environment!
The Star (Science, Technology, and Adventure Researchers) Center is a state of the art science facility providing a hands on, nurturing environment for girls to learn about science. Participants can study astronomy and take on the roles of scientists as observers, inventors, and problem solvers on a variety of subjects. Through a Global Positioning System (GPS), girls can learn to ID locations using latitude and longitude measurements. STAR Center programming was designed to help girls learn, and foster a higher self-confidence, particularly in the ability to master science. As a culminating event to all programs, participants can study Earth’s motion and place in the galaxy through STARLAB, a portable planetarium that projects the constellations.
