Description

Summer Discovery at the University of California, Los Angles offers students a wide range of academic and social activities designed to help students transition from high school to college.  Located in a residential area in suburban Los Angeles, UCLA is one of the world’s best known and well respected universities. The largest of the nine University of California campuses, UCLA is internationally recognized for its innovative curricula, commitment to community service, and excellence in undergraduate teaching. The UCLA faculty has included three Nobel Prize winners, and over 300 Fulbright scholars.  UCLA’s 24,000 undergraduate and 11,000 graduate students study on a beautiful 411-acre campus of which 60% is open land devoted to lush, green fields, tropical trees, flowers and plants. The University is situated at the foot of the Santa Monica Mountains and nestled between the residential communities of Beverly Hills, Bel-Air, Westwood, and Santa Monica —and just minutes from spectacular Pacific Ocean beaches. UCLA offers excellent facilities: a six million-volume library, numerous cultural centers and museums, one of the nation’s finest health care complexes, and some of the world’s finest athletic facilities — many built for the Los Angeles Olympic Games.

Students attending may choose to participate in a 6-week or 3-week program.  The 6  week program offers both college credit and enrichment courses.  The 3 week program offers only enrichment courses.  Students attending the 6 week program may choose from 6 curricula. A consultation with parents and a guidance counselor/ advisor is recommended when making curriculum selections.  Students selecting Curriculum A, enjoy the challenge of a college credit course and the advantage of an enrichment course to improve skills and expand knowledge. Students selecting Curriculum B and Curriculum C choose the more concentrated academic experience of two college credit courses. Curriculum D allows students to explore two non-credit courses. Curriculum E combines two non-credit courses designed for athletic and intellectual conditioning. Note: Princeton Review SAT and Intensive Weight Training, Tennis, Healthy Lifestyle, or Golf may also be taken separately as part of Curriculum A or Curriculum D. Please note: Students entering 10th grade may only enroll in Curriculum C, Curriculum D or Curriculum E.  In addition, all 6 week students attend our innovative evening workshop series, “Preparing for College and Life Workshops,” which meets 1 evening a week. College courses meet 2-5 times weekly, and enrichment courses meet 4-5 times weekly, Monday through Friday. Class time varies from 1-2 1/2 hours, depending on course selection.

The UCLA campus is adjacent to Westwood Village, one of America’s best college towns. The village of 30,000 boasts 50 restaurants, ice-cream and yogurt cafes galore, and lots of movie theatres. Westwood has essentially replaced Hollywood for prominent movie openings and celebrity sightings. In addition, the entertainment capital of the world is at our doorstep, with the best in concerts, theater, museums, theme parks, and television and movie studios. UCLA is also close to a myriad of outdoor pursuits including America’s greatest beaches, Santa Monica Mountains, and the best in boogie-boarding and surfing.  In addition, students will have the opportunity to participate in several activities and excursions including trips to San Diego, Venice and Balboa beaches, Universal Studios, Disneyland, Six Flags, Hurricane Harbor Water Park and much more.
