Mary Gwynn, the camp's founder, envisioned a special, nurturing environment where younger boys and girls could thrive at a noncompetitive camp that emphasized individual achievement. Miss Mary started her residential camp for boys and girls or her "child's world" in 1935. Hiking and pioneering were combined with fine arts, creative writing, and crafts to create a unique arts and outdoor-living-skills experience. The history of Camp Shohola for boys is richly mixed with the history of the local area. Some of the earliest local economy was related to the timber industry. At one time a logging company in Shohola PA cut timber and floated the logs down the stream to a mill, the remnants of which remain to this day. After the logging company ceased operations in the area, the property was purchased as a private summer camp.
