In the early nineteenth century Methodists began holding camp meetings, an outgrowth of their early revivals. Revival services were held during the winter months, and late summer was generally reserved for the district camp meeting. Simpson Park Campground was begun as the Romeo District Summer Camp for the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1865. It is one of the oldest camp meetings in continuous service in Michigan. ... Observer Editor and Publisher Mel Bleich stands in front of The Romeo Observer building that was enlarged in 1972 and renovated in 1978. Below top a special envelope and stamp created by the Romeo Post Office in honor of Bleich, who has owned the newspaper for 50 years as of May 1, 2009.
